Handcrafted wooden kaleidoscopes by Steve Kosztala of Cincinnati, and no two are alike. After a 25-year career as a building inspector and plans examiner for Hamilton County, he retired in 2018, took a kaleidoscope class and was hooked. Each scope is turned on a lathe at his workshop at Essex Studios and assembled by hand, in cedar, black walnut, oak, mahogany, spalted maple, purpleheart, pine and more; his own twist is a switch-on LED light at the base, so a scope can be viewed in the dark as well as held up to the sun or a lamp. Designs include Bauhaus, triangle, tubular, crystal ball, floating colored glass, Paris wheel and woodburned scopes, plus small children's scopes, and one took first prize in the three-dimensional category at the Norwood International Art Show.
